The State Government is privatising essential services in our hospitals. In Public Hands is committed to fighting the State Government’s privatisation agenda because we know that privatisation will lead to lower standards and poorer quality of care in our hospitals. We also know that it will result in fewer jobs, lower pay and increased workloads for hospital workers.

Recent experiences in Australia and around the world have shown that the privatising of government services has eroded the quality of care and lowered standards in hospitals. The State Government argues that privatisation saves money, but experience shows that privatised health services often cost taxpayers more money.

The fight against privatisation is a fight we cannot afford to lose. Please join our campaign to keep our hospitals In Public Hands.

Midland Hospital contract signed
Thursday, 21 June 2012 07:16

Midland Hospital Contract Signed

Colin Barnett Government’s government has signed a long term contract with the Catholic Church to privately run the new Midland Health Campus.

The new hospital will replace the existing Swan Districts Hospital, meaning there will no longer be a publicly run facility servicing the growing eastern region.

Allowing the St John of God, the Catholic Church, to run the facility privately will also mean a reduction in services provided onsite. The Church refuses to provide certain procedures, such as abortion, sterilisation procedures and contraception measures.

Opposition Introduces Bill to Save New Midland Hospital

Opposition Health Spokesman Roger Cook has tabled the No Privatisation of Midland Hospital Bill. Mr Cook said the Barnett Government had no evidence the privatisation of the Midland Health Campus was in the interests of patient health.

Fear, Secrets, Serco: It has to end.
Thursday, 20 October 2011 03:14

Channel Seven recently aired a story on Serco's mishandling of the March Christmas Island riots. A staff member has come forward with revelations that untrianed minors were made to wear security guard uniforms and stand on the front line.

This is a serious breach of the WA Occupational Health & Safety Act of 1984. Worksafe, along with Comcare, are investigating the incident. United Voice has called on Serco and the State Minister for Worksafe Simon O'Brien to ensure any current or former staff members that come forward on this issue are not punished by Serco's extreme confidentiality clauses in employees' contracts.

WE WANT FIONA STANLEY BUSINESS CASE RELEASED!
Monday, 28 March 2011 08:26

Our privatisation campaign continues as minor work bans in hospitals are brought to an end

On Saturday evening, Commissioner Jennifer Harrison ordered that minor work bans being followed by hospital support workers in protest at the government’s privatisation policy, be lifted.

She only came to this decision after visiting Royal Perth Hospital and the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on Saturday.

After careful consideration and due to the threat from the Barnett government to stop workers’ wages, all members in hospitals have been advised to return to full duties.

PRISONS, NUCLEAR WEAPONS, DETENTION CENTRES ...
Monday, 14 March 2011 08:53

Prisons, Nuclear weapons, Detention Centres ... Fiona Stanley. Flagship hospital to be run by for-profit monster

Colin Barnett has now privatised our state’s flagship hospital, signing a contract with the company that is struggling to run our detention centres, Serco.

It beggars belief that Colin Barnett would hand over our flagship hospital to a company that has proven itself incapable of properly running even our detention centres.

Despite the size and the scope of the contract and the importance of the Fiona Stanley Hospital to the WA Hospital system Colin Barnett has refused to release the business case for the privatised contract.

Hospital Workers Take Action Over Privatisation
Wednesday, 09 March 2011 07:43

Hospital support workers in metro government hospitals began work bans on Tuesday, March 8,  in protest at the Barnett government’s shameless admission that it will steamroll  public opinion and sign a contract worth an estimated $3.2bn for Serco to run 31 privatised services at the new Fiona Stanley Hospital.
The work bans include:

•    No moving linen

•    No moving rubbish

•    No picking up meal trays

•    No sterilising equipment for PRIVATE hospitals

United Voice members in hospitals are committed to the highest levels of patient care and safety. These work bans are designed to create strain on management, not compromise patient care.
