| The Barnett Government has privatised services in the new Fiona Stanley Hospital and Midland Health Campus and they won't stop there. The government has signed a contract with Serco to provide 31 privatised services at Fiona Stanley. It has also signed a contract with the Catholic Church's St John of God Healthcare, to provide all services at the new Midland Health Campus. In the 1990s, the Liberal Government privatised many services in hospitals. If Colin Barnett is re-elected in March 2013, he will look to privatise services at the new Children's Hospital and at existing hospitals, like Royal Perth, Charles Gairdner and Osborne Park. Privatisation of essential services has failed in the past and this government needs to learn from past mistakes. Public ownership of essential services is crucial because this provides a system of accountability and responsibility. Download our Get The Facts document to get informed about how the State Government is privatising health and how it has failed in the past. Why should hospitals be government run?Public services provide the back-bone of quality and accountability in our hospitals. If the government continues to sell off key public services it will undermine the quality of services provided everywhere. Every function within hospitals is integrated, they work together to provide health care. Doctors, nurses, cleaners, admin - all work together to provide high standards of care. By selling off parts of these services, like hospital cleaning, the state government is taking apart the system and undermining levels of care. Why? Because the people who work in hospitals and schools work as a team. If they are accountable to different employers, public accountability and responsibility is lost.

The State Government is privatising essential services in our hospitals. In Public Hands is committed to fighting the State Government’s privatisation agenda because we know that privatisation will lead to lower standards and poorer quality of care in our hospitals. We also know that it will result in fewer jobs, lower pay and increased workloads for hospital workers.
Recent experiences in Australia and around the world have shown that the privatising of government services has eroded the quality of care and lowered standards in hospitals. The State Government argues that privatisation saves money, but experience shows that privatised health services often cost taxpayers more money.
The fight against privatisation is a fight we cannot afford to lose. Please join our campaign to keep our hospitals In Public Hands.

"Under government there were only small pockets of MRSA outbreak and it was dealt with much better. Cleaners were more experienced and trained. The ward would be closed and the walls would be washed, floors stripped and all surfaces were disinfected. The ward would remain closed until the outbreak had been arrested."
